who is this Jesus person?
Why Jesus? Why is he so important?
The simple answer to the question, “Why does the church focus so much on Jesus?” is this: because of whom he is and what He has done.
Who is Jesus?
First of all, Jesus was a human being, a man. He lived and he died. He ate, drank, slept, perspired and did everything else inherent to being human. The fact that Jesus was a man, however, does not mean he was a “mere man.” Christians believe that this particular Jew from Nazareth is God in human flesh. That is to say, the day Jesus was born (Christmas Day) God entered into His own creation as a man in order, ultimately, to “save” creation from all the pain and death that marks it. Who is Jesus? Sometimes it helps to start with what he is for us. Jesus of Nazareth is sight for those who are blind, strength for the weak. He is drink for the thirsty, food for those who hunger. He is hope for those who have none, and he is the ultimate goal of our lives. We don’t just want to be “like him,” we want to know Him, to be with him, in life and beyond.
What has he done?
God’s plan to save the world (to save us!) begins with God entering the world as the man Jesus, and moves to His death on the cross. Jesus’ death is the ideal picture of how God works. The Perfect for the imperfect. The Sinless for the sinful. The Strong saves the weak. Jesus saves us. Sin separated human beings from God and stained God’s good creation, but Jesus’ death and resurrection destroyed the effect and power of sin and reunited God and his creation, human beings included. In other words, God gave himself for us in death, but death could not hold him for long. On Easter Sunday Jesus rose from the grave, leaving the tomb quite empty, but leaving the world full of hope and promise. All this is to say, the One who died for us is not a mere memory; He is the Living Lord. He calls us to know and love and serve him. It all begins when we say to Him, “You are God’s chosen King, the ruler of my life. And I am yours.”

We have a number of folk in our church who have battled cancer – and won! They are eager to provide emotional and spiritual support – and give practical advice for how to keep yourself healthy, sane and as vigorous as possible while you go through this.
• Someone you can call for support.
• Someone who checks up on how you are doing.
• Someone to keep you in their prayers.
• Friends who help you in practical ways.
Please call our church office at 770-418-1101 or email Rev. Dr. Bill Gerrard at jcccadmin@johnscreekchristian.org for more information.
